History of Brown's Dairy

On June 1, 2017 at 5:30p, celebrate the 70th anniversary of Brown's Dairy, today known as Valpo Velvet Ice Cream! Catherine Brown will present on the history of this Valparaiso landmark. After the talk, we'll be serving up Valpo Velvet Ice Cream. Valpo Velvet was started as the Valparaiso Home Ice Company in 1920, and the moniker Valpo Velvet was adopted for their line of ice cream. By 1922, the company had expanded to serve all of Porter County ice, ice cream, and dairy products. In 1947, Herbert J. Brown purchased the business, and Brown's Dairy was born. Herb Brown brought his own ice cream experience and recipes to the business. Today, seventy years later, Valpo Velvet Ice Cream is still produced at the same location it was when Herb Brown took over the business. This event is free and open to the public.
