Westchester Public Library invites the public to join Alzheimer’s Speaks founder, Lori La Bey, as she presents the 90-minute dementia film His Neighbor Phil and learn how it relates to your own family, circle of friends, workplace, and business. After the film, La Bey will discuss “caring roles” and “protection vs. perceptions” and why care partner roles are changing, as well as answer questions. This is a free educational event, everyone is welcome to attend. Space is limited and registration is appreciated. La Bey will give her presentation at Westchester Public Library's Baugher Center on Wednesday, March 7, at 2:00 p.m., with a repeat session on Thursday, March 8, at 5:00 p.m. The Baugher Center is located at 100 W. Indiana Ave. in Chesterton. An additional presentation will be also given on Thursday, March 8, 8:00 a.m. at the Ivy Tech Valpo Campus auditorium. The Ivy Tech Valpo Campus is located at 3100 Ivy Tech Dr. in Valparaiso. Those interested in attending should register by visiting communityconvoalz.eventbrite.com or by calling Karyn at Westchester Public Library's Thomas Branch, (219) 926-7696. In His Neighbor Phil, Harvey is devoted to his beautiful wife, Mary, who is stricken with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Discovering that music somehow gets through to Mary when nothing else will, Harvey brings music to Mary whenever possible, to keep her with him, even for a few moments more. Education on Alzheimer's and other dementias is vital to understanding how these diseases affect loved ones and community members. According to the Alzheimer's Association, over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and as many as 16 million will have the disease in 2050. The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is estimated to total $259 billion in 2017, increasing to $1.1 trillion (in today’s dollars) by mid-century. Nearly one in every three seniors who dies each year has Alzheimer’s or another dementia. This event is made possible by a grant from National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) Greater Midwest Region (GMR) and Westchester Public Library's partnership with Pines Village Retirement Communities.
